On Monday, June 5, Needham High School graduated its Class of 2017 at Conte Forum at Boston College. Despite the change of location from Memorial Field due to rainy conditions, the graduation ceremony was successfully held in an upbeat fashion.

The event began with performances by the High School Band, which played “Crown Imperial” and “Pomp and Circumstance.” Following the Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem, Master of Ceremonies and Assistant Principal Johnny Cole introduced Principal Aaron Sicotte. Sicotte pointed out that the class of 2017 had yet to embark on their most important journeys in life: “You’ve spent a mere quarter of your life building to this moment ... what will your story be?”

Awards for Academic Excellence and Service were received by Monika Hedman and Grace Ward, respectively.

After a speech to the class by student speaker Ariana Orozco, Ward, the 2017 Class President, announced the Class’ gift to the high school: a “Welcome to Needham High School” sign. Ward then added her own remarks to the class, stating, “It has been a pleasure to be your President ... we have changed the high school. Now, it’s our opportunity to change the world.”

The event continued with a performance of “Bridge over Troubled Water” by the High School Chorus.

Student speaker Beatrice Beutel followed by addressing the class with inspiring words: “Every person within the community can contribute something to better the whole, but only if they pursue their individual goals.”

Grad Pic 3Superintendent Daniel Gutekanst then congratulated the Class on their achievements and introduced the long-awaited presentation of diplomas.

Thanks to thoughtful statements and musical performances by NHS teachers and students, the NHS Class of 2017 marked an end to their high school careers with a touching and memorable graduation ceremony.
