Lucy Campbell has been named the recipient of the December 2017 RAY of Hope.

Lucy is a senior at Needham High School. “She has been a volunteer in a number of our programs,” States Carolyn from Youth & Family Services, who nominated Lucy. “She has gone above and beyond the high school volunteer requirement of 60 hours, earning over a hundred volunteer hours through our programs." Some of Lucy’s many volunteer projects include: the VIP mentoring program, being a peer mentor to a young child who she meets with weekly and Project VAN, organizing games at a local nursing home, cleaning up local parks, and working at the food pantry in town. “She is always willing to help and provides instruction and guidance to her peers. As a supervisor and organizer of many volunteer programs, I always appreciate Lucy’s positive attitude and her helpfulness,” added Carolyn.

The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life annual walk is just one of the many different organizations Lucy is a part of in the Needham community. She also works with the Needham Community Council, a local non-profit organization helping underserved and disadvantaged families, where she has volunteered since 2012. “This volunteer work is extremely important to the community of Needham as these local agencies have come to rely on the students who volunteer with them," states Lucy.

At Needham High School, Lucy is a member of the NHS varsity swim and dive team, and the Needham summer swim team, where she is assistant captain. Some of Lucy’s other activities include NHS varsity lacrosse team, where she won a state championship this year.

In her spare time, Lucy babysits, dog-sits, and works at the Boston Sports Club as a lifeguard. Her art work was selected and featured at Needham Beth Shalom Garden Club’s Art in Bloom exhibit.

Lucy is a National Honor Society member and plans to study Environmental Science in college next year.
