On Saturday at Newman Elementary School, Let’s Build Engineering Fun for Kids and the Needham Science Center hosted the first Engineering Extravaganza for families to participate in fun, hands-on activities that tested engineering knowledge and sparked creativity.
From artistic robots to a cantilever challenge to kite making to an “Angry Birds” catapult activity, families wandered through the Newman cafeteria and discovered fun projects around every corner.
Each of the projects also provided lessons on engineering concepts such as building a cantilever bridge or playing with robots created by Needham High students. Down the far hallway, paper airplanes were being built and tested to try and find the best design for the furthest flight.
Almost without knowing it, the young students were learning about engineering all while having a lot of fun.
Let’s Build Engineering Fun for Kids is a program that helps develop engineering curriculum for Needham schools and regularly sets up projects, such as the ones on display on Saturday, in classrooms to educate and entertain students.
