On Saturday, April 28, Needham’s John Eliot Elementary School hosted it’s first annual Multicultural Night & Potluck. More than 25 Eliot families worked together to plan this celebration of the many cultures represented at Eliot, which included informative table displays (representing Colombia, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Texas, Latvia, Ireland, Australia, Portugal, Jewish Culture, China, Ghana, Cabo Verde, Iraq, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and India), performances (Indian dance and percussion, Israeli dance, Russian song, Afro-Caribbean dance, and Chinese song, dance and instrumentals), and an array of delicious foods from all over the world. An estimated 200-plus people attended the event.
“The celebration of diversity was alive in such a special way today. Every time I looked around I saw families smiling, laughing and learning together,” said Eliot PTC Co-President Cheri Pugatch.
"Thank you for making these cultures tangible to our children, enriching their understanding of how people look and live," Eliot parent Jenn Scheck-Kahn added. "What a gift last night was to our community!”
"The event reminded me why Eliot school is such a special and wonderful community,” said Principal Karen Bourn.
