For more than 20 years, the Winter Carnival Committee, comprised of families from the Memorial and Wheelock PTO, has been transforming Memorial School’s classrooms and hallways into a festive Winter Carnival. The event features dozens of booths offering a wide range of games and activities, raffles and prizes as well as lunch and a silent auction.
Last year’s Winter Carnival attracted an estimated 500 families and provided over $25,000 toward field trip transportation, classroom literacy programs, STEM programs in our libraries, and funding for art, music and cultural programs, to name a few. In addition, the Carnival’s Angel Fund supports students in our community who would otherwise be unable to take part in some programs and field trips.
“It takes months of planning and work,” says 2017 co-chair Amanda Spears, “and we are lucky to have so many wonderful volunteers helping us this year. We all know how much the town looks forward to Winter Carnival and that both the Memorial and Wheelock schools count on the funding it creates to support educational enrichment programs and initiatives for the teachers and students.”
“The upside of taking over an event with such a long, successful history is that you already have a roadmap,” says co-chair Kelly Wysocki, “but there’s also pressure to make sure it continues to be a success.”
This year’s 30-member planning committee has been hard at work since September. A few of the 2017 Carnival highlights will include: inflatables in the gym; carnival games in every classroom; Medfield Spirit Hallway, Touch a Truck with Medfield Public Works; and photo, craft and Pokemon booths.
The Silent Auction will feature hundreds of items including teacher experiences, camps, museum tickets, Disney World Park Hopper Passes, and Sports Memorabilia from the Di Natale Family. There will be a raffle for an Xbox Game System as well as for many gift baskets with themes ranging from Star Wars, to Music Mania and Summer Fun.
A treasured part of the Winter Carnival is the Poster Contest. Their posters will be displayed around town and at medfieldwintercarnival.com.
This year’s Memorial winners are Toby Sheridan, Abigail Boxmeyer, and Chase Sullivan. This year’s Wheelock winners are Kevin Nee, Sophie Baker, and Caroline Herd.
The Medfield Winter Carnival 2017 is Saturday, March 11, from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at Memorial School, 59 Adams St.
“The support the community has generated is amazing,” says Amanda Spears, “We thank everyone who has already contributed to making this event so awesome.”
