Neighbor’s good deed helps MFD extinguishes house fire

At approximately 2:40pm on January 27th 2026, the Medfield Fire Department was dispatched to reported smoke coming from the attic of a two-story single family home. Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy smoke showing from the attic area of the home.

Firefighters initiated an aggressive interior attack and located active fire in the attic space. Due to the extent of the fire and the need for significant overhaul operations, a second alarm was struck, bringing additional personnel, along with a special call for an additional ladder truck to assist in reaching the roof of the home. The fire was quickly brought under control and all units cleared the scene at approximately 5:30pm.

A key factor in the successful and timely extinguishment of this fire was the condition of the nearest fire hydrant. A resident in the neighborhood had previously cleared snow from around the hydrant, allowing crews immediate access to a reliable water supply and saving valuable time during early operations.

The Medfield Fire Department would like to thank the Medfield Police Department and the Medfield Dispatch Center for their support. We would also like to thank our mutual aid partners for their assistance, including: Millis, Westwood, Dover, Sherborn, Medway, Norfolk, Sharon, and Norwood Fire Departments.

There were no reported injuries, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Medfield Fire Department reminds residents of the importance of keeping fire hydrants clear of snow and debris year-round, as quick access can make a significant difference in emergency response and fire control.
