Forty Medfield students in grades 6-8 signed up for the first Blake Middle School Science Fair, which was held on Friday afternoon in the school’s library.
From displays about the sugar content in popular drinks to creating tornados to playing with foam, the students showed off a range of creativity and scientific inquisitiveness that impressed the friends, family members, teachers, staff, and judges.
The Science Fair was the brainchild of Medfield High junior Emma Twer, who organized it and helped promote it to the younger students.
“I was thinking about having one at the high school,” said Twer, “but everyone is so busy there that I decided to bring it here where they have a little more time to do projects.”
Twer admitted that she was surprised that Medfield did not already have a fair for students to showcase science projects.
She explained, “The middle school science fair sounds like something every school would have…hopefully it will become an annual thing.”
As she looked around the room and watched the students interact and explain each of the projects, Twer was excited about how the first event turned out.
“Medfield’s such a sciency school [district] that I thought it would be great to have,” she said, “and it’s great to see everyone get so into it.”
Twer added, “It’s so heart-warming. One of the kids said they worked so hard on it and they paid so much [on materials] to get this project done, so it meant a lot.”
