The Medfield High School Student Council has been awarded a 2016 National Gold Council of Excellence Award by the National Association of Student Councils (NASC) for its exemplary record of leadership, service, and activities that serve to improve the school and community.

This is the first year the Student Council has ever been recognized at the National level, and the council received the highest level possible.
“Receiving National Gold Council of Excellence reflects the highest dedication on the part of the school to providing a strong, well-rounded student council program,” said National Association of Secondary School Principals President, Ann Postlewaite.

The Medfield High Student Council was entered into the competition by Student Council Vice President Erin Bankert, who spent many hours on the project, compiling information about all the events the Student Council puts on.

To receive the award, the council also needed to submit four major events to a national database available to other Student Councils, in addition to other basic requirements that the Student Council needed in order to win an award, including having a written constitution, regular meetings, a democratic election process, and membership in NASC.
The award took into consideration how well the Medfield High Student Council exemplified the ideals of the NASC, which includes leadership training for council members, teacher and staff appreciation activities, student recognition programs, school and community service projects, spirit activities, goal setting, financial planning and active participation in state and national student council associations.

“I am so proud of what this council has accomplished,” said Student Council advisor Jessica Safer. “Medfield High School has never received national recognition before. It has been an honor to work with these students who truly make Medfield High School such an amazing place.

“I think this year’s council, especially the officers, have set a high standard. I have spoken with some of the underclassmen and they plan on submitting a national binder of excellence next year, hoping to continue this success,” Safer said.
