A team of sixth graders from Blake Middle School claimed first place at the regional Destination Imagination tournament and qualified for the state competition to be held this weekend (Saturday, March 26) at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
Daniel Riddick, Grayson McClements, Ryan Tierney, Max Augustini, Brendan Lawless, Kyle Gaffney and Henry Latham won first place in the Improvisational Challenge.
The team chose to compete in Improvisation (an area outside its collective comfort zone) after successfully competing in DI structural engineering and robotics challenges the two prior years. The team is coached by Katie Lawless and Paula Tierney.
In addition to the Blake team, a team from Dale Street School received top scores for its solution to the Musical Mashup structural challenge by designing and building a structure that supports weights and is a musical instrument.
The Medfield High team earned its place at the DI state tournament with the Get a Clue fine arts challenge showcasing suspect characters and a TechniClue that solved a mystery.
Destination Imagination is a non-profit organization with the purpose to “inspire and equip students to become the next generation of innovators and leaders.”
All together, 15 teams of students from Medfield competed at regionals.
