Medfield bids farewell to Tracy Mitchell

H. Tracy Mitchell III, age 73 of Medfield, died Monday morning August 14th, 2017 at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. He was surrounded by his loving family when his heart of gold stopped beating.

Tracy loved being a Funeral Director, but he loved his family even more. He leaves behind his "reason for being" Emma B (Roberts) Mitchell, the "centers of his life", Michelle R. Gaughran and her husband Mike of Franklin, Wayne T. Mitchell of Milford, Jennifer L. Caruso and her husband Tom of Medfield, and Jessica L. Kelly and her husband Matt of Franklin, and the late Greg W. Mitchell. Big brother to Pauline Gross and her husband Eriks of AZ, Winnie McCasland and the late Keith McCasland of Plainville, Whitney Mitchell and his wife Karen of Foxborough, Douglas Mitchell and his wife Judy of WA, Laurie Martin and the late Bim Martin of Millis, and Charlotte Campbell and her husband Joel of AZ. He is also survived by his biggest fans, his grandchildren; Colton Mitchell of Walpole, Ella Mitchell of Milford, Madi Gaughran of Franklin, Joseph, Nicholas, Maggie and Jack Caruso of Medfield, and Rylee, Brady, and Tyler Kelly of Franklin. Tracy also leaves behind his Godchildren, Becca & Ben Martin of Millis, and many adoring nieces and nephews.

The casket carrying H. Tracy Mitchell III, the proud owner of Roberts-Mitchell Funeral Service for almost 50 years, was escorted down Route 109 in a horse drawn carriage to his funeral services at St. Edward’s Church on Monday morning. A burial with military honors followed at Vine Lake Cemetery.

Born in Boston he was the son of the late Harry T. Jr and Dorothy A. (Crook) Mitchell. He graduated from Foxborough High School in 1963 and joined the United States Navy, serving on the USS Randolph. After returning home he attended the New England Institute of Applied Arts & Science, graduating in 1969.

Formerly of Foxborough and Millis, he was a life member of Charles River Lodge, A.F. & A.M., Massachusetts Consistory, Mt. Lebanon Royal Arch Chapter, Milford Commandery, Aleppo Shrine, Beckwith Post 110 American Legion, National Skeet Association and Amvets Post 495 Medway. Tracy was also a charter member of Medfield Employers and Merchants Organization, and held the position of Secretary/Treasurer of Massachusetts Funeral Directors Association, as well as serving on the Board of Directors of the MFDA, and the British Institute of Embalmers. He served as Past President of the Medfield Acacia Club, and was also the former Superintendent and Commissioner of Vine Lake Cemetery, Medfield. Tracy was a member of The Boston Court, R.O.J. #63, Order of the Thistle, Fin Fur & Feather Club/Millis, Independent Sportsman Club/Foxborough, Society in Dedham for Apprehending Horse Thieves, Charles River Valley Shrine Club, National Funeral Directors Association, Medfield Sportsman’s Club; a former volunteer of the Medfield Fire Department, Medfield Council of Aging, Medfield Housing Authority and Medfield Trust Fund Commissioner. In addition, he founded the Medfield Horse Thieves Detecting Society. Tracy was the proud owner of Roberts-Mitchell Funeral Service, for almost 50 years, with locations in Medfield, Millis and Medway. He was intensely devoted to his career and was honored and privileged to serve his families in the surrounding communities.

While Tracy possessed a professional and compassionate demeanor - many people knew him for his quick wit. He appreciated a good time as much as anyone but his work and the families he served always took priority.

Funeral services were held on Monday, August 21st at 11:00 a.m. at St. Edward the Confessor Church. Burial with military honors followed at Vine Lake Cemetery.
