For some, the arrival of spring, and the planting season, means it's time to get their gloved hands back in the soil to ensure the best summer garden possible.
Much to the delight of these people, the Medfield Garden Club revs up the excitement every year with their annual garden sale. On Saturday, May 15, prospective gardeners flocked to the rear parking lot of First Parish to buy new plants - and they were not disappointed.
Like many 2020 activities, last year's sale was canceled due to the pandemic. This year’s, however, proved that the Medfield Garden Club was back and ready to get back to business. “We’ve all be aching for some sort of social activity in the Garden Club. Most of the Garden Club is vaccinated at this point, so it’s like a huge celebration of being able to work together again,” observed Mary Holt-Wilson.
The day began with plants covering tables and the lawn in front of First Parish. Tables held signs noting the different categories of plants. People browsed through perennials for the sun, perennials for the shade, shrubs, native plants, and herbs. There was a plethora of potted plants, many lovingly grown in the gardens of club members, as well as different bulbs that were up for sale. Of all the plants available, the bleeding heart sold out the fastest, possibly due to its being in bloom now.
This year’s sale was met with an outstanding amount of interest; potential customers were lined up almost an hour before the sale opened. “By 9:15 - we opened at 9:00 - we had three-quarters of the inventory gone,” said Holt-Wilson. By 9:30, the stock of remaining plants was already on tables, waiting to be picked through and bought by someone. “We had a lot of plants, and most went in fifteen minutes. It shows how much the community wants to get out and are excited for a beautiful day.”
“We’ve all been able to garden, but we’ve all been stuck in our own spaces. If you’re a gardener, the thing you look forward to is all the different garden sales. Gardeners love to get other people’s plants, and to be denied for a whole year was pretty rough,” explained Holt-Wilson. Now that they’re back out, gardeners of all levels are ecstatic to get their hands on some new plants.
Gardening season is upon us and members of the Medfield Garden Club have ushered it in with a successful plant sale. With townsfolk happy with their plants, the town of Medfield is sure to be bursting with foliage and blossoms in the coming months.
