Superintendent Jeffrey J. Marsden and High School Principal Robert Parga are pleased to share that eight Medfield High School (MHS) students have been recognized for their academic achievements.
Seniors Haydon Hillenmeyer, Nina Paguio, Christian Roth, Roman Schoenfeld and Joy Xu-Allan are among 34,000 students nationwide to be honored as National Merit Scholarship Commended Students. Commended students are placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2024 competition by taking the 2022 Preliminary/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. They will receive letters of commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program, and from the District.
MHS students Trenton Louis and Alexander Mazurenko have been recognized as Semifinalists in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship competition. Semifinalists will move forward in the competition for over 7,100 National Merit scholarships. To become a finalist, the semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application which includes academic records, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. From over 16,000 Semifinalists, more than 15,000 will advance to the finalist level, where about 7,250 Merit Scholarship Awards will be awarded.
Two MHS students, Ava Aldrich and Roman Schoenfeld, received the National Hispanic Recognition Award from College Board’s National Recognition Program. Aldrich and Schoenfeld received this award in recognition of their academic achievements in school and outstanding performance on the PSAT/NMSQT®. Students must receive a qualifying score on their PSAT as well as a qualifying GPA.
"I would like to congratulate the group of students on their well-deserved recognitions," said Principal Parga. "Throughout their time at Medfield High School, these students have shown an unwavering commitment to their academics and have served as role models for their peers both inside and outside the classroom."
Haydon Hillenmeyer - Commended Student
Hillenmeyer is captain of both the boys soccer and volleyball teams at MHS. He takes five AP courses at MHS and plans to study engineering after graduation.
Nina Paguio - Commended Student
Paguio is captain of the cross country and track and field teams at MHS. Paguio takes five AP courses. Paguio serves as a peer tutor through the LinK Peer Tutoring Programas well as on her own time. She is a member of DECA and a Senior Ambassador.
Christian Roth - Commended Student
Roth lived in Germany for seven years and is fluent in the language. At MHS, Roth is a student representative on the High School Site Council. Outside of school he enjoys playing volleyball, the oboe and coding.
Roman Schoenfeld - Commended Student and National Hispanic Recognition Award
Schoenfeld is a starting player on the football team and a member of the winter and spring track & field teams at MHS. He attended the West Point Leadership 2023 Summer Program. Schoenfeld is a member of Mock Trial, Science Olympiad, DECA and is vice president of the Latin Honor Society.
Joy Xu-Allan - Commended Student
Xu-Allan is fluent in Mandarin. She is a three-year member of the varsity hockey team at MHS. She is president of the Art Magazine Club, participates in an independent study making comics and serves as a peer tutor in physics.
Trenton Louis - Semifinalist
Louis takes three AP courses at MHS. He is a peer tutor in the writing center and also peer tutors middle school students in Mandarin. He is a volunteer at the Medfield Public Library and is working with the Bellforge Arts Center to build new teen spaces in the Medfield community.
Alexander Mazurenko - Semifinalist
Mazurenko takes three AP courses at MHS. He is passionate about music and takes Honors jazz band, playing the guitar and saxophone. Mazurenko is a student leader of the Jazz Combo, co-president of the band and is also the president of the Science Olympiad.
Ava Aldrich - National Hispanic Recognition Award
Aldrich is captain of the cross country team and a member of the lacrosse team at MHS. She is president of the Spanish Club and a member of the Investment Club, Model UN and the Medfield Service Committee. Outside of school, she volunteers at Boston homeless shelters and participates in a Youth Fellowship at the United Church of Christ. Aldrich works at the Sailing Cow Cafe and at Brothers Marketplace.
