Last Wednesday, students and families at Wheelock School in Medfield celebrated the Chinese New Year with a special program featuring various projects across several disciplines. More than 70 Mandarin students from Medfield participated in the event that honored the Year of the Monkey.

All Wheelock students made Chinese opera masks in art classes taught by Tracey Babin, while music teachers Eithne Stover and Mike Slason taught the students a traditional Chinese ribbon dance. A student performed a Chinese yo-yo demonstration and Media Specialist Bethany Robinson showed a PowerPoint presentation about Chinese New Year.

There were also posters placed around the school honoring the Year of the Monkey to build excitement for the event.

The Wheelock PTO and the Medfield Coalition for Public Education (MCPE) helped support the event. MCPE also sponsored a seven-month program with the Confucius Institute at Bryant University to teach tai chi to the Mandarin students.

Principal Donna Olson said, “This wonderful event was a marvelous collaboration among students, teachers, parents and community.  We hope to hold this event again.”
