The Alumni Jam on Saturday, Jan. 9, in the Medfield High auditorium is not just a reunion of musical classmates over the years, but also coincides with the birthday of Lowell Mason, father of music education.

He was born right here in Medfield on Jan. 8, 1792 and his namesake nonprofit, the Lowell Mason House, will receive 100 percent of the concert proceeds for ongoing restoration efforts of his former home on Green St.

In addition to more than 25 alumni performing, the Jam also features co-emcees and former Medfield band members Selectman Mark Fisher and Medfield Police Chief Bob Meaney, who met in middle school and continued in the ensemble together through high school.

They will both be on board representing the Medfield High Alumni Association, which is co-sponsoring the event with the Medfield Music Association.

Another MHS alumnus and current Medfield music teacher Keith Curbow, is helping to coordinate the Jam with orchestra alumnus Nick DeSantis, and long-time Music Director Doug Olsen, who will be performing on trumpet alongside Curbow on saxophone. In addition, nearly 25 other alumni have signed up to perform across band, orchestra, choir and jazz ensembles.

Alumni scheduled to play include former All-State award-winning students, past Essentially Ellington and Mingus Festival participants, members of the Orchestra ensemble that performed at Mechanics Hall as part of its MICCA Gold award last year, and many alumni who continue to pursue music at the college level full or part time, or have launched musical careers. Four current music students will be joining the line up too.

“The Jam will feature so many talented Medfield musicians from multiple graduating classes, but we’ll be performing in a looser, more casual format where no one is being graded or assessed by judges like in high school or college,” said Curbow.

“Everyone can just enjoy playing together and entertaining the community -- and all for a worthy and local musical cause: to help transform the Lowell Mason House into a modern destination for music instruction and performance.”

Tickets for the Alumni Jam are $10 general admission and $5 for students and senior citizens. They are on sale at Park Street Books, Rock ‘N Roll Rib Joint, Keith Curbow Studio, and online via medfieldmusicassociation.com.
