Take a bow: ‘Mamma Mia’

The community was in for a treat on the weekend of March 19-21, as Dover-Sherborn High School was preparing to present its production of “Mamma Mia,” featuring the music of ABBA.

The pandemic cancelled those plans. It did not, however, erase the hard work of the cast and crew.

The show required the full ensemble cast to sing and dance in almost every scene, with thirteen big dance numbers. With 60 cast members, most requiring five different costume changes (and some up to eight), crew members - most notably members of the Costume Committee - had their hands full. So did the individuals constructing the set, who were tasked with transforming Mudge Auditorium into a Greek island.

The music, meanwhile, departed from DSHS’ usual fare. “‘Mamma Mia’ is a real departure for the DS musical orchestra,” explained Orchestra Director and Sherborn resident Ardys Flavelle. “This is the first time we have had four keyboard players, two guitarists, and electric bass in the pit at one time. Additionally, we have no traditionally orchestral instrumentalists such as reeds, brass, and strings.”

Hometown Weekly joins the community in applauding the cast and crew of “Mamma Mia.”
