Dr. Paul Steen will address the subject of tropical plants, those that many call “house plants,” at the March meeting of the Chicatabot Garden Club on March 14. Coffee will start at 9:00 a.m., with the program beginning at 9:30 in the Dover Library Meeting Room, lower level.
Dr. Steen is a retired internal medicine physician, software executive and gardener for over 50 years. He has lived in Sturbridge for the past 40 years, where he grows camellias, succulents and tropical plants in his “hobby greenhouse.” His outdoor garden is primarily woodlands and shade.
He completed three years of college-level horticulture courses at the New England School of Gardening at Tower Hill Botanic Garden and became a certified Master Gardener in 2005; he is currently the past president of the Massachusetts Master Gardener Association.
What exactly is a tropical plant? What is unique about them? Tropical plants are house plants in New England but are not the common ones grown indoors. He will focus on many specific plants such as Bougainvillea, Camellia, Oranges, Cliva, Gardenia, Tropical Hibiscus, Banana and some orchids.
Those who are longing to get out into their outdoor gardens and/or struggle to keep their exotic indoor plants in top notch shape will benefit from Dr. Sheen’s insights and handouts. All who envy the green thumb of their neighbor who has glorious plants indoors all year round, will enjoy learning just how that is accomplished.
All are welcome to attend, free of charge.
