On May 20, the Sherborn Fire Department hosted its second annual Pig Roast BallBQ at the Sherborn Community Center. From 6 to 10 p.m., Sherborn residents were invited to join the Fire Department for a night of music, drinks, delicious food, and socializing.
The Department used to host a Firefighter’s Ball, which was a much more formal event. “A lot of people in town didn’t realize that it was a community event, not just something we did solely for us,” Solomon explained. “We wanted to encourage more community attendance and make it more of a community event.” In addition, attendance had gone down in recent years. “More people were doing more things as the weather got nicer.” A brainstorm led to options including a BBQ or a beach party. They decided to combine the two, which someone coined the BallBQ, leading to what they have today.
Cornhole boards were set up outside of the Community Center, in addition to a fairly large smoker on to which Blue Ribbon BBQ placed a whole pig with all of the fixings. The upstairs of the center was adorably decorated with fresh floral arrangements, picnic style table cloths, and Christmas lights. The ambiance was completed with a purely country music playlist. The event on a whole embodied “low key.”
“It’s a chance for people in town to come and socialize in an informal setting. It’s not an emergency setting when everyone is doing their job and has a serious face on,” Solomon said. “A chance for everyone to talk with people who may have seen in town, whether it’s on a call or at a Dunkin’ Donuts. Just a chance for everyone to spend a nice night together.” Considering the incredible weather, good food, and good company, it certainly was.
