Every Thursday, the Sherborn Council on Aging offers a Senior Café. This event, which has been going on for over 20 years, is a time for seniors not only to savor a freshly cooked meal, but also to socialize, receive some entertainment, and enjoy themselves. The event is sponsored by the COA, and run by Kathy Horigan-Dye, the Café Director. Horigan-Dye has been involved for the past four years, helping to sequester funding, find entertainment, and provide the best possible Senior Café.
This past Thursday, the weekly entertainment was provided by the Music Makers, a local Dover-Sherborn group. “It was founded by Judy Davis, and they go to different councils on aging and different nursing homes - they’re wonderful!” Karen Juhl, Director of the Sherborn Council on Aging said. “They have singers from MetroWest, it’s not just Dover-Sherborn, but mostly it is. And they do all of sorts of wonderful songs. We have them twice a year. They do a winter holiday program and then they do a spring program.”
Another special treat at this particular Café came in the form of decorations made by a local Daisy troop. The troop crafted place-mats, as well as little paper daisy bouquets for all of the tables.
This week, the meal consisted of a chicken and broccoli dish with cheddar, green beans with butter, festival corn with peppers, and coleslaw. “Sometimes, moms from Sherborn will put the meal together, sometimes it’s civic organizations like the Lions Club or Metro West Fire Explorers,” Horigan-Dye explained.
In addition, she finds the entertainment each week. “A lot of my entertainers are from the community, which is great. Every week, we try to have a speaker - it could be a travel series or an entertainer. This week is music, next week is a talk on Namibia. We try to mix it up - I don’t want to get anyone bored!” Entertainers have included an Elvis impersonator, a talk by Jim Nelon about Iceland, and Dover-Sherborn High School musicians.
In addition to this wonderful Senior Café, which is held in Pilgrim Church at noon, over the summer, the cafés transition into garden parties. The biggest one of the season will be on June 8 at 177 Farm Road, where there will be over 200 peonies in bloom. The lunch is hosted by Sally Willis and Joan Dunn.
