The MassDOT Registry of Motor Vehicles has announced that a new, redesigned New England Patriots license plate is now available. Registry customers can purchase the new license plate at state-wide RMV Service Centers or online at http://www.massrmv.com. After paying a registration fee, a license plate holder will then pay a special plate renewal fee of $40 every two years.
“The Registry is excited to offer this newly redesigned New England Patriots license plate to RMV customers,” said Registrar of Motor Vehicles Erin Deveney. “The redesigned plate will raise awareness and funding for a notable cause while also allowing fans to show their support for our five-time Super Bowl champions, the New England Patriots.”
The updated New England Patriots license plate highlights the team’s five Super Bowl championships with the specific emblem of “5X Champions.” Below the emblem are the numerals of each Super Bowl that the Patriots have won and a star to celebrate each championship.
“We are very excited to give our fans in Massachusetts the opportunity to showcase their Patriots pride by celebrating what was unequivocally the sweetest Super Bowl victory in our team’s history,” said Patriots Chairman and CEO Robert Kraft. “We have had a longstanding relationship with the Massachusetts RMV. Through this license plate program, the New England Patriots Foundation matches all monies generated to double the impact in reaching hundreds of nonprofit organizations throughout the Commonwealth. We thank everyone who has participated for their generosity and assistance in supporting local charities.”
Proceeds from this plate benefit the New England Patriots Foundation. The foundation was established by Robert Kraft when he purchased the team in 1994 as a way for the organization to give back to the communities it calls home. The foundation's primary goal is to support initiatives that aid the youth and families of New England by assisting programs that foster cultural diversity, education, family and health while taking a special interest in youth programs that encourage education, creativity and development of character.
The foundation will receive a portion of the initial special plate fee, and the full $40 special plate fee at renewal. The foundation matches all of these donated funds to help support charities across the state.
The previously designed Patriots license plates will no longer be issued but will remain valid.
There will be no duplication of plate numbers, as the numbering on the new plates will start where the old plates ended.
Customers who have the original license plates can upgrade to the new design by requesting either a duplicate plate or a plate swap as described below:
• Duplicate Plate Transaction - If a customer requests a duplicate plate transaction, they will be issued redesigned plates with the same plate number as the previous plates. The duplicate plate fee is $20 and the customer will receive the plates by mail within 12 weeks.
• License Plate Swap - If a customer requests a plate swap, they will be issued redesigned plates with a different number than the previous plates. The customer will be given the plates immediately. For a standard plate swap, the fee is $20. For a renew-swap, the customer will also need to pay the $40 special plate fee.
Customers switching from the original design to the new license plate only need to pay the $40 special plate fee for renew or renew-swap transactions.
The RMV currently offers approximately 20 special design plates. In addition to the initial registration fee, special plates require a plate fee with each renewal.
Special plates are randomly assigned. Customers may not request a particular plate number or retain their current plate number. The following criteria must be met:
1) Your registration must be active and in good standing. You can check the status of your registration online at (https://secure.rmv.state.ma.us/RegInquiry/intro.aspx );
2) You must be the registered owner of the vehicle; and
3) The Massachusetts license number should match the license number of one of the
registered owners.
