Sports camp comes to Dover under the guidance of Coach Pete Sylvester. Each week, the camp focuses on one sport in particular. This particular week was basketball, and the campers learned the basics of it—dribbling, shooting, passing, rebounding, and defense. Around the drills and pick up games, campers also play other games for a change of pace. These include but aren’t limited to 500, flag football, and kickball.
According to Sylvester, the great thing about the camp is that “We take water breaks, but everyone plays the whole time.” This coupled with the fact that the main idea is “the idea of the camp is to play a lot of different games for about thirty to forty minutes. Everyone’s moving, everyone’s touching the ball.”
Peter, 6, recalled in a game of flag football when he “juked a big kid and he fell and I scored a touchdown.”
Due to inclement weather, of the usual ten campers, only four boys were present on the rainy Thursday of the second session of camp. Inside, the boys played games like airless air hockey (the table wasn’t working properly), Connect Four, and Guess Who while waiting for the weather to clear.
When the sun came out, the four present campers and camp staff went outside and played a game called “World Cup.” They took turns being a soccer goalie, and the other three would practice shooting on him. There was a timer of five minutes, and whoever let up the least amount of goals in their five minute goalie stint would win. Besides the soccer skills the game encourages, it also helps the boys learn teamwork, sportsmanship, and cooperation.
Coach Sylvester will run a similar program in August.
