The end of the school year is in sight, which means not only is the summer rapidly approaching, but the pressures of school are coming to a climax before vacation is upon us.
The Dover Library is always there to support children in the area. One of the ways the library allows students to blow off some steam is with their weekly DIY Hour. This past week, on May 10 from 3:30 to 5:30, students in grades six through twelve were invited to make capiz shell wind chimes. Lauren Berghman, Library Assistant and Young Adult Librarian, led the charge in this do-it-yourself demonstration.
Berghman had to figure out how to make the wind chime herself before holding the event, which she said took a bit of research and some finagling. The capiz shells come from a windowpane oyster. They are lightweight but have a glass-like texture, which produces a lovely chiming sound when thrown together. The wind chimes were made of red, white, and blue capiz shells, to provide a Patriotic side for the upcoming Memorial Day. The DIY Hour is just one of the many programs the library will continue to do over the summer.
Upcoming DIY Hours include clay sculptures and scratch paper art. This year, the library will be continuing its summer reading club. There is a teen book group, a middle school book club, and a book group for younger students. Throughout the summer, participants will be given scratch-offs when they finish a book, giving them the chance to win prizes and be rewarded the more they read.
