The Dover Library drew quite a crowd last Tuesday for its annual Fun Fair. The event featured family-friendly games, prizes, and outdoor fun on the library’s lawn - not to mention more smiling children than one could possibly count.
“We came here last year for the first time and they loved it, so I brought them back today,” said Marie Papathanasiou, was at the fair with her two young grandchildren, Sia and Tony. “This is a special treat because they never get lollipops,” Papathanasiou said as her grandkids dropped pennies into a fish tank.
Among the different prizes kids could win were candy, cupcakes, and toy medals. In addition to fun games, kids were popping massive bubbles made by the hilarious Mr. Vinny the Bubble Guy.
Head of Adult Services Jim Weston was helping operate the popcorn machine near the library’s entrance.
“We have been doing this for several years now,” said Weston. “We love it. We usually get two to three hundred people. We welcome everybody - not just from Dover, but the surrounding towns - anybody that wants to come by. We just love having this many people at the library.”
“In Dover and the other surrounding towns, a library is more than just a few books,” said Chris Connoloy, who was at the event with his daughter and two young granddaughters. “If [people] are not aware of that, they should be - and whenever they can support their local library, they should, because it’s a tremendous resource.”
“It’s fantastic. It’s great to see the community come and enjoy these activities,” said beaming Young Adult Librarian Lauren Berghman, who helped make sure the event ran successfully.
“The library loves having everyone together.”
