At its meeting on January 6, the Westwood Select Board reviewed comprehensive plans to replace Westwood’s aging Fire Station 1 (FS1). This proposed project aims to meet modern public safety standards while addressing the long-standing deficiencies of the current facility, originally built 75 years ago.
In January 2024, residents approved funding for both the design and construction bid process during a Special Town Meeting. Throughout 2024, significant efforts were made to design an efficient building tailored to the needs of the Westwood community and its Fire Department.
The existing FS1, at 14,000 square feet, is critically undersized and faces numerous structural issues, including foundation cracks and failing floors. Additionally, it does not meet current safety, accessibility, or operational standards, making it inadequate for a growing department that serves both male and female firefighters.
“The new station will be a game-changer for our department and the community we serve,” said Fire Chief Lund. “The current facility has significant limitations that hinder our ability to provide efficient and effective emergency response. This project ensures we are prepared to meet Westwood’s public safety needs for decades to come.”
The new fire station will be constructed on the same site at 637 High Street. The proposed design includes modern features essential for the fire department, such as apparatus bays, training spaces, decontamination facilities, and dormitory areas for the men and women in the department—all of which enhance operational readiness.
The total estimated cost for the new FS1 is $40 million. To reduce expenses, the project team implemented design modifications, including reducing the building's footprint by 3,500 square feet, simplifying the roof design, cutting the number of windows, and eliminating non-essential spaces—saving nearly $3 million. Additionally, the new facility will be fully electric, complying with Massachusetts' Stretch Energy Code requirements.
The need for a new FS1 was first identified over a decade ago. The current facility is no longer viable due to its size and safety concerns. The proposed station is designed to meet the department’s needs for the next 50 years and beyond.
An updated project cost estimate will be available in February 2025, with the construction bidding process set for March 2025. Final approvals for funding and construction require a Town Meeting vote on May 19, 2025, followed by a ballot vote on June 3, 2025.
This vital project underscores Westwood’s commitment to public safety infrastructure while maintaining fiscal responsibility. For more information about the proposed FS1 project, please visit the town website.
