Fall athletic success sets the bar

The Westwood Wolverines had an outstanding fall sports season, excelling in both their leagues and the playoffs. Notably, the cross-country team claimed the Division 2 state championship—the first in school history. The girls’ varsity volleyball team also enjoyed a stellar season, reaching the semifinals of the Division 2 Massachusetts state tournament and finishing with an 18-4 record. The team was led by captains Francesca Gennari, Katherine Sanel, and Angelina Homsy.

The varsity football team earned the Tri-Valley League (TVL) Large title with an 8-3 overall record and a 4-1 league record. Captains Drew Donegan, Charlie Toole, Dante Martucci, and Mario Vinci demonstrated exceptional leadership throughout the season.

Westwood’s soccer teams also showed promise. The boys’ team finished 7-6-5, while the girls posted an impressive 11-8-2 record. Girls’ field hockey ended the season at 10-7-2, and the golf team achieved a remarkable 16-2 record. Golf standouts Lillian Guleserian and Patrick Dalton were named Co-MVPs.

Looking ahead to winter sports, basketball, hockey, swimming, skiing, indoor track, and gymnastics will take center stage. The girls’ basketball team, captained by Charlotte Hurley, Caroline Nozzolillo, and last year’s TVL All-Star Mackenzie Kaiser, aims to improve on last season’s 7-15 record. With new talent joining the roster, they are poised for a stronger season. The boys’ basketball team, which went 19-5 last year, looks to advance beyond the Round of 16 in the playoffs. The team will be led by captains Eli Ifrah, Matthew Preti, and Mekhi Dickerson. Sophomores Adrian Ortiz and Julie Hogan are among the rising stars to watch on both teams.

On the hockey front, boys’ varsity captains Jack Holland, Sean Blomquist, and Timmy Donovan hope to build on last season’s 11-9-1 record, which ended in the Round of 32. The girls’ hockey team, featuring some eighth-grade players, will be captained by Hayden Cox, Ava Themistocles, and Kate Sullivan as they set their sights on a championship.

The indoor track season highlights returning sophomore Susannah Rockers, who competed at the New Balance Nationals last year in the freshman mile. The girls’ shuttle hurdles team also made a national impact last season, finishing 10th at the New Balance Nationals. The boys’ varsity track team kicks off its season at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 13 at the Reggie Lewis Center.

The swim and dive team will be led by captains Eve Lucas, Abbie Phu, Colin Belcher, Owen Belcher, Gabe Caxoeiro, and Adrian Wong. The boys’ swim team aims to win the TVL title for the third consecutive year.
