The Needham Department of Public Works turned a rainy Saturday morning around with their Touch-a-Truck event at DeFazio Park. Eleven vehicles, including fire trucks, police cars, street sweepers, and construction vehicles, gathered to educate children about their roles in the community.
This hands-on experience attracted countless families, allowing children to explore these vital vehicles. Kids were invited to climb inside the vehicles and interact with the sirens and lights. Professionals accompanied their vehicles to answer questions and explain their functions. Children also interacted with police officers and firefighters to learn about safety and how these vehicles assist those in need.
The Needham YMCA attended the event, offering face painting and information about their community services. Puddlestompers, a nature exploration program for kids, showcased local findings such as bird feathers and butterflies. A large pile of sand with hidden toy construction vehicles provided another activity for children, who could dig out the toys and take them home. The trucks were placed next to the playground at DeFazio Park, giving kids an additional outlet for their energy.
Community resource dog Ghost attended with his handler. Ghost, a favorite in the town, was recognized by many children from school visits. The presence of the police dog offered a learning opportunity about how to approach and pet an unfamiliar dog and how Ghost serves the community. Ghost's handler answered questions and handed out trading cards featuring the community resource dogs.
The Touch-a-Truck event provided more than just a way to pass a rainy weekend morning. It engaged kids with their community, allowing them to meet town employees and learn about their jobs and the vehicles they operate daily.
