Even though rain was forecast for most of the day, a steady stream of people attended a festive Westwood Day on Saturday September, 23rd. Visitors enjoyed most of the day in a light drizzle, before heavy rain began to fall toward closing time.
The day started at 9 am with a 5K Road Race and a 1 Mile Fun Run at 10 am.
The Food Court bustled with people in line for delicious fare at food trucks and booths, including Cousins Maine Lobster, Grandy's Ice Cream, Chick-fil-A , Juicy Greens, House of Lo, Grecko, Pancho's Taqueria, Bibi's Cafe, and One Bistro. A large tent provided covered seating facing Stage A.
Entertainment on Stage A included the talented students at the Band Gig School of Music. The energetic Benchmark Band put on a fun performance of 1960s rock tunes. Their act also included a girl-group subset that performed "Leader of the Pack" and other fun female group hits.
Westwood's Poet Laureate, Lynne Viti, and Youth Poet Laureate, Lucie Sechler, delighted the crowd with their original poetry.
Later in the afternoon, InFinnity, a band comprised of a mother and father playing guitars, their daughter on bass, their son on drums, and a friend on keyboards, put on a fantastic performance of 1970s rock music, including Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way," Pat Benetar's "Heartbreaker," and Santana's "Black Magic Woman."
It appeared that some of the activities for children and performances on Stage B were canceled due to the weather, while others, such as a K9 Demo by the Norfolk County Sheriff's Department, a Westwood Fire Department Burn Demo, and the Roaming Railroad, did take place.
The Vendor Village was packed with booths from local businesses, school sports teams, volunteer organizations, churches, media companies, and town department representatives.
Luckily, people of all ages enjoyed most of the activities planned for Westwood Day, despite the light drizzle. Children were smiling, talking excitedly, and running to and from booths and the Food Court. Adults listened to great music, perused items offered for sale, learned about organizations in town, and brought home information from companies of interest. The parking areas and senior golf cart rides set up by the town were convenient and well-organized. Westwood Day was full of fun and relaxation for all.
