Mezzo-soprano Tatum singing in Needham

Mezzo-Soprano Renee Tatum will sing a program of songs reflecting love and hope

The Needham Concert Society will present a program of vocal and piano music titled "Love and Hope on a Spring Afternoon," featuring mezzo-soprano Renee Tatum and pianist Douglas Sumi in Carter Memorial United Methodist Church, 800 Highland Avenue, Needham, on Sunday April 3, at 3 p.m.

The program features a set of Gypsy Songs by Antonin Dvorak; songs by Amy Beach, and songs by Sergei Rachmaninoff, Piotyr Tchaikovsky, John Duke, Samuel Barber, Marta Keen, and Gene Scheer. 

Ms. Tatum is widely acclaimed for her "commanding and dramatic stage presence" and her "gleaming vocalism." In recent years, she has sung roles in Wagner's "Gotterdamerung" and "Parsifal" in Taiwan, "The Magic Flute" at the Metropolitan Opera, "Il Trovatore" with the Pensacola Opera. This season, she appeared in Berg's "Wozzeck" with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. 

Pianist Douglas Sumi is a pianist with an international reputation as a vocal coach, conductor, and accompanist to opera stars. Notably, he has worked with Renee Fleming, and he worked for many seasons on staff of the Los Angeles Opera. He currently serves on the faculty of Boston University. 

Concert attendees will be required to present proof of COVID vaccination, and to wear face masks at all times inside the venue.

The Needham Concert Society is a nonprofit organization that strives to present excellent live music to Needham audiences. Tickets may be purchased at the door, or online at www.NeedhamConcertSociety.org. Ticket prices are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors. Students admitted free. Because of vaccination requirements, children younger than five will not be admitted.
