The last time a Walpole high school varsity athletic team played a game was on March 8 when the boys ice hockey team defeated Archbishop Williams for the Division I South championship. Days later, the state championship game against Belmont was cancelled due to COVID-19, followed by the entire spring athletic season.

This past week, Fall I athletes were finally granted the opportunity to return to the playing field together as field hockey, soccer, cross-country and golf tryouts/practices got underway. Tryouts for each team were held at Turco Field as well as Ellis Field in East Walpole.

Of course, all athletes remained socially distant and wore a mask at all times.

Field hockey will play its first game on October 5 at home against Milton. Boys soccer will open up on October 6 at home against Milton while girls soccer will open up the same day on the road at Milton. Boys cross-country will open up at Milton on October 7 while the girls will host Milton at Turco Field. At the time of print, boys golf play a home-and-home with Milton on September 29 and 30 to open their season.
