Over 1400 runners and walkers from 68 towns from age 11 months old to 77 years young gathered on Sunday, May 15 for the 26th annual running of the Needham Youth Track Club’s Great Bear Run at Pollard School.
Dan Vassallo of Peabody doubled by capturing the 5K run in 15:21 and winning the 1 Mile Run in 5:00. Jessica Rice of Needham won the women’s 5K run in 18:07 while 14-year-old Allison Sibold of Wellesley was victor in the 1 Mile Run. while 9-year-old Mia Barrus of Cranston RI led the girls in 6:34. 83-year-young Phyllis Mays set her 8th age group record in the 5K (54:01).
The event raised funds for Prostate Cancer Research. Over 700 children competed in a 26.2 meter mini-marathon for tots 0-3, 100 meter for age 4-5, 200 meter for age 6, 400 meter for age 7-12, and 1 Mile and 5K runs.
