Eighth grader Cooper Evans has won the Dover-Sherborn Middle School section of the National Geographic Bee.

At an all-school assembly December 23, Cooper won in the championship round by correctly identifying the three states Yellowstone National Park is located in as Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. Eighth grader Varun Jayanti was the runner-up.

Both boys were also finalists in last year’s geography bee. Cooper now takes a written exam to determine if he qualifies to advance to the Massachusetts Geographic Bee, which will be held April 1 at Worcester Academy.

Out of 550 participants in grades 6-8 classroom bees in November, the other eight Dover-Sherborn Middle School finalists were eighth graders Eva Koehl and Grace Phillips; seventh graders Gregg Vignaux (tied for third place), Piper Evans (tied for third) and Macie Tanaka; and sixth graders Matteo Montemayor, Jeremy Lawrence and Sam Correll.
