The rain lightly drizzled down onto umbrellas, raincoats, and bags as a crowd gathered at the Walpole home turf field on a cloudy afternoon, October 30th. The occasion was the Walpole boys' soccer team hosting their non-league competition, Bishop Feehan, to conclude their regular season. The Timberwolves secured a 1-0 victory, providing them with valuable momentum heading into the postseason.
The first half remained scoreless as Walpole and Bishop Feehan fiercely battled on the field, competing for possession and scoring opportunities. Walpole exhibited intense determination and a clear desire to win, evident in their aggressive play against Bishop Feehan's defense, creating several potential scoring chances.
During halftime, discussions buzzed on both sides of the field as Walpole strategized to gain the upper hand over their opponents. The second half commenced with the sound of the whistle echoing through the stadium, both teams locked in a 0-0 deadlock.
Walpole continued to display their strengths on the field, maneuvering past Bishop Feehan's defense. In a pivotal moment, senior Ryan Lunn unleashed a powerful shot into the back of the net, granting the Timberwolves a 1-0 lead. Walpole maintained their advantage for the remainder of the match, thwarting Bishop Feehan's scoring opportunities.
Head coach Lee Delaney shared his insights on the game and the regular season.
“We were really hungry for a victory at the end of the season, we’ve come close down, we’ve had some tough losses with last-second goals against Weymouth and Braintree in particular. It’s just nice to get a win heading into the postseason with a little momentum. But they really wanted this one to end the season on a high note, and we’ve been working very hard with not much in return, so this is very satisfying to get a win for our last game of the regular season,” said Delaney.
The Timberwolves played on Saturday, November 4th against Marlborough in their first round of postseason but fell short 2-1.
