The Charles River Center and the Needham Council on Aging have partnered to assist seniors who need help fulfilling the weekly task of shopping for groceries.

Each Monday and Wednesday, five groups of volunteers from the Charles River Center visit a senior, whose name was provided by the COA, to pick up a list of items and a form of payment and they head to Sudbury Farms to shop.

The volunteers will even call the senior for any last-minute items that might be needed before heading back to deliver the groceries. The program is now in its 10th year in Needham.

The organization provides housing, employment training, and other services for children and adults with developmental disabilities. Not only is the shopping program a big help for seniors but it is also an opportunity for the community members that the Charles River Center serves to give back and work on transferable skills.

“We are always encouraging the individuals we support to live as independently as possible, said Kristy Hargreaves, Program Director at Charles River Center. “Through the Senior Shopping program, they are able to work on socialization, budgeting, and shopping skills - all while helping someone in need in the community.”

“The people from the Charles River Center are so nice and very polite,” said Thelma Arduino, a Needham resident who uses the service. “I gave up driving, so having them shop for me is a big help. It’s truly a pleasure to see them and have them help me each week.”
