The crash of a single-engine Piper PA-24 airplane in Westwood left Peartree Drive closed as an active crime scene, two passengers in critical condition, and the community stunned. The plane had been descending to land at Norwood Memorial Airport.

The crash occurred at approximately 3:15 p.m. on Saturday when the aircraft slammed into a wooded residential area three miles to the north of the airport.

State Police reported that the Pilot, a 65 year-old man from Newton, had been taken to Boston Medical Center. His passenger, a 77 year-old Norwood resident, was also taken to Boston Medical Center after first being rushed to Norwood Hospital. Both were stated to be in critical condition as of Saturday night.

Westwood Police and emergency crews were joined by Dedham, Norwood, Canton and State Police teams in their response to the accident, though that is where their involvement will end. "Our role was the rescue," Westwood Chief of Police Jeffrey Silva said via Twitter, "not the investigation."

The cause of the incident is still unknown, and the investigation of the crash will be handled by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
