The Medfield and Westwood High School varsity girls basketball teams each entered last Tuesday night’s matchup undefeated and looking to earn a key win over a quality conference opponent. Senior forward Allison Petit and senior guard Sophia Ouimette led the lady-Warriors (6-0) to a 51-37 victory over the Wolverines (5-1), who were led by the swift ball-handling of senior point guard Allison Morin and hard work in the paint by junior forward Elizabeth Kelly.

The two teams traded blows back and forth in quarter one, with Medfield finding success in the form of turnovers caused by their full court press style of defensive play. Despite the lock-down defensive play by the Warriors, the Wolverines were able to hang around and ended the first quarter knotted at 12, thanks to a two-point shot at the buzzer by senior forward Christina Bonfiglio.

The Warriors turned it on in quarter two, however, thanks in large part to the numerous steals by Allison Petit that led to easy buckets for Medfield. The Warriors ended up going on a 19-6 run in the second quarter and entered the half up big at 31-18.

The Wolverines came out of the half determined to get back into the contest, but unfortunately for them, the Warriors continued to hammer the back court with pressure, causing turnovers and more possessions for Medfield. The Warriors were able to capitalize on their extra possessions with points, and entered the fourth quarter with a 19-point lead at 44-25.

Westwood was able to outscore Medfield 12-7 in the final frame, but the damage by Petit, Ouimette, and Maggie McCarthy had already been done, and the Warriors held on for the 51-37 victory to continue their unbeaten season and gain the all important edge over Westwood in the TVL standings.
