The Needham High boys’ basketball team reached the Div. 1 South quarterfinal with a decisive 64-51 victory over first round opponent Durfee (the Rockets led by as many as 20 in the fourth quarter against the Hilltoppers), but the Rockets could not get past No. 11 seed BC High in a thrilling 55-53 loss.

Thomas Shaughnessy led the way for Needham against BC High, which was ranked in the top 20 for much of the season, with 21 points in front of a packed gym.

The Rockets led 53-50 late in the fourth quarter but the Eagles knocked down a three to tie it and then forced a turnover to get the ball back. Off a miss, Carl Pierre collected an offensive rebound and got fouled, making both free throws for the lead.

Needham still had one more chance at the win to advance to the semifinal to face Bay State Conference rival Newton North, but the last second three was narrowly wide.
